In reference to the circulating food product recall notice issued in a neighbouring country concerning some batches of Nestlé NAN infant formula and follow-on formula due to the potential presence of cereulide toxin, the Brunei Darussalam Food Authority (BDFA) confirms, following proactive engagement with the International Food Safety Network (INFOSAN) and consultation with official local importers, that the affected brand is not imported commercially into this country. However, members of the public who have brought the product into the country for personal use or purchased the product through an online platform are advised to stop using the product immediately. Those who have consumed the product and are unwell should seek prompt medical attention.

Cereulide is a toxin produced by the bacteria Bacillus cereus that causes gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhoea. Symptoms develop within 30 minutes to six hours after consumption and usually resolve within a day; vulnerable groups such as infants and persons with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of developing complications.

BDFA would like to remind all that under Section 9 of subsection (1), subparagraph (i) of the Public Health (Food) Act (Chapter 182), any person who prepares, sells, or imports a food item that can harm health can be imprisoned for five years, fined, or both.
